After School Film Institute

Educating at-risk students in the filmmaking process.

Our Mission

ASFI brings renowned industry professionals into underserved inner-city schools. We provide students with unique opportunities to explore and create the projects involved in the filmmaking process under the supervision of celebrated industry mentors.

In its involvement of distinguished industry and community leaders, ASFI aims to bring together the South Florida community under a single banner with a unified goal: Offering students in underserved schools opportunities to create original works with guidance and mentorship of leading industry creatives; ultimately resulting in a pipeline between participating schools and creative industries.

The Approach

Our Successes

ASFI's inaugural 2016-2017 program saw the creation of a statewide network of artists, craftspeople, community leaders, and renowned arts organizations all contributing to the program's inaugural student film production, a short film titled SPEECHLESS. Written, produced, directed, shot, and edited entirely by the program's participating students under the supervision of renowned South Florida filmmakers, SPEECHLESS had its World Premiere screening at the Coral Gables Arts Cinema in 2017, before going on to participate in several South Florida film festivals. Ultimately, the student production has been picked up for national broadcast and online distribution by PBS, who will host the television premiere of SPEECHLESS in Spring of 2018.
